Jalen Hale update: Kalen DeBoer shares latest on injured WR before bowl game
It’s been exactly seven months since Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer provided an update on injured wide receiver Jalen Hale. In May, DeBoer didn’t want to rule Hale out for the full fall based on his approach to his recovery. But with only a game left in front of the Crimson Tide, could the sophomore wideout return to the field for the ReliaQuest Bowl?
“I don’t anticipate you seeing him in the bowl,” DeBoer said on Sunday night.
Hale sustained a significant injury in the spring and has not dressed out for any of Alabama’s games this season. He has, however, been able to run onto the field with his teammates before home games, and DeBoer on Sunday shared that Hale has been doing some things.
“He’s been out there,” DeBoer said. “We were excited – it’s been about maybe a week or two ago – to see him out there running around and doing some things. Again, not any type of full contact yet at that point. But just was fun to see his body out there running around.
“He brings a smile on his face, and I know he was enjoying that moment, getting out there, just working through the process work and progressing along.”

Hale is in his second season at Alabama after appearing in 13 of the Crimson Tide’s 14 games as a true freshman in 2023. He finished seventh on the team in receiving yards (148) on just five catches and was set to see his role increase with five players at his position moving on from the program. The injury kept him from contributing in Year 2, but based on DeBoer’s latest update, Hale has had a positive attitude throughout his recovery process.
And the soon-to-be redshirt sophomore sounds like he could be ready for spring in 2025.
“Man, he’s been amazing, going back to the time he even had his injury, just with his mindset,” DeBoer said. “And I know our guys really respect him for that and appreciate the grind he’s been putting in to come back as quick as he possibly can.”
