Former Alabama quarterback and Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Namath will serve as the guest picker on ESPN’s College GameDay ahead of the Alabama-Texas game on Saturday.

Namath was also a College GameDay guest picker before the 2014 and 2020 Iron Bowls.

Between 1962 and 1964, Namath quarterbacked the Crimson Tide under legendary head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant and led Alabama to a national championship in 1964. During his time in Tuscaloosa, Namath led the storied football program to a 29–4 record over three seasons. He went on to enjoy an illustrious career in the NFL with the New York Jets, which was highlighted by a win in Super Bowl III, where he was named the MVP of the game.

The Tide and Longhorns will meet for the 11th time in series history on Saturday, Sept. 9, and just the second time ever in Tuscaloosa when the two teams square off at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The Longhorns hold a 7-2-1 advantage in the series with both losses coming in the previous two meetings between the programs, including a 20-19 Alabama win in Austin last year. Saturday’s game will be Texas’ first trip to Tuscaloosa since 1902.

Alabama will be making its 55th appearance overall (35-19) on College GameDay when the popular pregame show airs from The Quad in Tuscaloosa this Saturday. The University will be hosting GameDay for the 17th time in the show’s history. Saturday also marks Alabama’s 46th appearance under Nick Saban (32-13). The 46 appearances in the Saban era are eight better than Ohio State (38) for the most times on GameDay since the 2007 season.

Both Saban and Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian are scheduled to join the GameDay set on Saturday. A feature on longtime Tide play-by-play announcer Eli Gold will also be aired.

College GameDay will be live from Denny Chimes on the UA campus on Saturday from 8-11 a.m. CT. Kickoff for the Alabama-Texas game is set for 6 p.m., also airing on ESPN.
