Keon Sabb update: Alabama safety ruled out for rest of 2024 season
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer provided an update on Keon Sabb, who suffered an injury against Tennessee and hasn’t played in the previous three games.
Asked for the latest on Sabb’s recovery, DeBoer revealed that Sabb is out for the season.
“He had his surgery and was away from us for a few days there,” DeBoer said on Monday. “But he’s just a guy that really has grown relationships with the team. We want him around here. He’s one of those guys, just like the others that are done for the year too, that care so much about this team and we care about him.”
Before his injury, Sabb was responsible for 39 tackles, two interceptions and four pass breakups in Year 1 at Alabama. The Michigan transfer has made an instant impact on the Tide’s defense, not only as a starting safety alongside veteran Malachi Moore but also as a leader. Members of Alabama’s leadership council asked for Sabb to be added this summer.
Sabb will not play again this season, joining wide receiver Cole Adams and Wolf linebacker Que Robinson, but DeBoer expects the transfer defensive back to be back for the 2025 season.
“As far as a timeline, I can’t give that to you right now,” DeBoer said. “I know it will obviously be through this season. But we expect him back and ready to roll for next year, of course.

“That’s just something that I see him and I love what his commitment level has been to our program and we want to support him as he groes through these times because injuries are hard for guys because this is not their identity but this is a big part of what they do is play football right now.”
When Sabb went down, Alabama looked to Bray Hubbard to replace the starting safety, and the sophomore has registered 13 tackles and two interceptions in his first three career starts.
“I think what’s most impressive about Bray is his preparation has not changed now that he’s the starter from when he was the backup to Keon Sabb,” said Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack.
“Bray was so locked in every single week and prepared like he was the starter, did a great job of communicating with the twos in practice every single day and was probably the glue that held some of those young DBs together, that when his opportunity came, he was ready for it.
“He’s playing at a really high level because he’s prepared at a really high level all season long.”
