Mark Sears breaks the Alabama record for points in a single season
LOS ANGELES – Alabama guard Mark Sears now holds the record for most points scored in a single season in Crimson Tide history. In Alabama’s Sweet 16 matchup against North Carolina, Sears is up to 16 points, allowing him to pass Reggie King for the school record.
Sears now has 748 for his career to overtake King’s 747 points scored in 1979. Earlier in the NCAA Tournament, Sears surpassed his 2022-23 teammate, Brandon Miller, for second place. And now, he sits alone atop the all-time list of Alabama’s single-season scorers.
Sears is one the only Division I player who has 730 points, 140 assists, 140 rebounds and 80 threes this season and one of just 12 players in the last 31 years to reach the milestone. He has scored 20 or more points in 24 games this year, breaking another of King’s records.
A second-team All-American and first-team All-SEC selection, Sears entered weekend No. 2 of the 2024 NCAA Tournament averaging 21.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game while shooting 50.5 percent from the field and 43.5 percent from beyond the arch.

Before Thursday’s game with the Tar Heels, the senior shared what contributed to his success.
“I would say really having that motivation from last year when we were the No. 1 seed and we got upset by San Diego State,” Sears said. “And just having that feeling of, man, it was basically disappointing because we were the No. 1 seed and wanted to win the whole thing.
“Just having that motivation through the whole offseason, just constantly putting in the work and hours. No matter when I’m tired, just continuing to fight through it and be mentally tough. I just had that mindset throughout the whole offseason.
“I couldn’t have done it without my teammates right here. They’re really great teammates. I wouldn’t be myself without these guys.”
