Former Maryland tight end CJ Dippre announced his intentions to transfer to the University of Alabama on Tuesday morning. The 6-foot-5, 260-pound athlete revealed his decision via social media choosing the Crimson Tide over the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Dippre entered the transfer portal in December after completing his true sophomore season for the Terrapins. Dippre registered 30 receptions for 314 yards and three touchdowns during the 2022 season. He had four catches for 30 yards and a touchdown, in one of his most productive games, against Ohio State on November 19.

Alabama adds player at position of need

Dippre is the first portal addition for Alabama for next season. He took official visits to Alabama and Ohio State earlier this month. Nick Saban extended an offer when he visited Tuscaloosa on December 9-11. He visited the Buckeyes the following weekend.

“It was awesome,” Dippre told BamaInsider after receiving the offer from the Crimson Tide. “I called my dad, and he got pretty emotional; just the road I’ve been through. Not being highly recruited out of high school and going somewhere to play for two years. Now, having the opportunity to play with one of the best programs in the country.

“They’re going to try to compete for a championship every year. You’re going against the best in the country every day in practice. That’s definitely a big factor in it.”

First year tight ends coach, Joe Cox, helped Alabama sign Ty Lockwood four-star tight end from Independence High School in Thompson’s Station, Tennessee. Lockwood flipped his commitment from Ohio State in August.

Coach Cox notched his second tight end recruiting win against the Buckeyes on Tuesday. Dippre spent a lot of time with his future position coach during the first visit in Tuscaloosa.

“We were able to break down the film and tell me what he thinks I can do and where I can get a little better at,” Dippre told BamaInsider. “Obviously, they are thin at that position. They have some great player leaving, so I can come in and make an impact early if I keep my head down and grind.”
