Minkah Fitzpatrick finally got his big pay day. After several successful seasons playing with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the news broke on Wednesday morning that the former Alabama defensive back would be signing a massive contract extension with the franchise.

According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the four-year extension is worth over $18.4 million per year with $36 million guaranteed. Those eye-opening numbers will reportedly make Fitzpatrick the league’s highest paid safety, too.

“I am very excited,” Fitzpatrick said soon after signing the contract, per the team’s official website. “I am still kind of in shock right now. It’s a blessing. I am really excited. It’s just the beginning. I am appreciative. I am thankful. Now I just want to keep on chopping.

“I love the history here. What it stands for. The standard we are held to. The standard Coach (Mike) Tomlin holds us to, on the field and off the field. The standard of winning playoff games, division titles and championship games.

“I really like it here. I have been playing well the last three seasons, at a high level. I love the atmosphere, the coaching, the tradition. Being able to continue that for the next few years is definitely a blessing.”

Fitzpatrick was originally selected by the Miami Dolphins in the first round (No. 11 overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft. But it only took just over a season in south Florida to figure out that he wanted to continue his playing careeer elsewhere.

In Sept. of 2019, the Dolphins granted Fitzpatrick’s wish by trading him to the Steelers in an exchange of picks that included a 2020 first-rounder going back to Miami. In the end, that was the correct move for Pittsburgh and Fitzpatrick, as that marriage has blossomed into one of the league’s best.

In 46 games, the former five-star talent has accumulated 203 tackles and 11 interceptions to go along with 27 pass deflections. And for his career, Fitzpatrick has 13 interceptions with three of them being returned for a defensive touchdown.

In other words, he’s been a playmaking presence ever since he settled into his free safety role after the trade to Pittsburgh. Fitzpatrick is only 25 years old, too, which means his best years should still be ahead of him. He’s earned his status as the highest-paid safety in the NFL.

Plus, this will act as year another recruiting tool for Alabama coach Nick Saban.
