The Alabama men’s basketball team on Monday revealed new uniforms for its upcoming home game against Texas A&M. Before a full view of the uniforms was unveiled, Crimson Tide coach Nate Oats shared the significance of the program going with throwback look.

“I did hear something about that,” said Oats before talking to the Birmingham Tip Off Club, courtesy of ABC 33/40. “The players are all fired up. I think they did a quick peek for the players.

“… It’s for this weekend’s game because I think they’re bringing back Pettway’s team that won. I don’t know if the uniforms are going to look like Pettway’s team. Those are kind of cool. I don’t know what they are.”

No. 15 Alabama (17-7, 9-2 SEC) will sport the new threads when it hosts the Aggies (15-8, 6-4) at Coleman Coliseum on Saturday, Feb. 17. According to Oats, the Crimson Tide will honor the 20th anniversary of its 2003-04 men’s basketball team that advanced to the program’s first and only Elite Eight before losing to the eventual national champion UConn Huskies.

Former assistant coach Antoine Pettway was a part of that team and spent the last four years on Oats’ staff – and the last 16 seasons at Alabama – before landing his first head coaching job at Kennesaw State this offseason. There is a chance Pettway makes his way back to Coleman on Saturday, as the Owls play a home game against North Florida the night before.

As for the uniforms, they feature Crimson above the player’s number and Tide below it on the front of the jersey, while Alabama’s retro block A logo is on the right leg of the shorts. Oats has been a fan of the older symbol since he took over the men’s basketball program in Tuscaloosa, sporting it on his clothing throughout his tenure. Now his players will, too.

“I don’t have it on today, but I do like the old A, so maybe we’ll go with it,” Oats said. “I don’t even know what they look like, but I’m kind of fired up for them. The players are fired up for them.”

Saturday’s Alabama-Texas A&M game is scheduled to tip off at 11 a.m. CT and air on ESPN.
