Nate Oats doesn't foresee any issues getting medical redshirts for Latrell Wrightsell, Houston Mallette

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama’s senior night will be tomorrow night’s game against Florida, the final game in Coleman Coliseum for the Crimson Tide’s seniors.
There are five players participating in senior day festivities: Mark Sears, Grant Nelson, Chris Youngblood, Cliff Omoruyi, and walk-on Max Scharnowski. Notably, neither redshirt senior Latrell Wrightsell or senior Houston Mallette will be participating, as both are seeking medical redshirts to return for the 2025-26 season.
Alabama head coach Nate Oats updated the statuses of both players’ redshirts during his Tuesday press conference.
“I don’t think you get confirmation until you’ve submitted it all after the season, but they’re both medically related, haven’t played in 30 percent of the games, and didn’t play in any game after the midway point, which are the rules,” Oats said. “Talking to (trainer) Clarke (Holter), he doesn’t anticipate any issues with either of them. Obviously Wrightsell tore an Achilles, and Houston couldn’t participate in any workouts all summer, was limited all fall, and still is limited in what he can do now. I don’t think he anticipates there being any issue with those two guys getting their medical redshirt.”

Wrightsell ruptured his Achilles tendon just eight games into the season, ending his fifth season of college basketball extremely early. He was averaging 11.2 points per game and shooting 42 percent from three before his injury, coming off a 2024 season where he was the 4th-most efficient player in the sport.
Mallette was originally announced to be redshirting the whole year before the season-opener in November, but burned his redshirt in December following Wrightsell’s injury. He appeared in just six games before suffering complications with a previous knee injury, resulting in him being shut down for the year. During the games in which he appeared, he averaged 3.2 points and shot 50 percent from 3-point range.
Both Wrightsell and Mallette give Alabama some strong shooting pieces to build around next season, as Oats works to replace the production lost by the graduating seniors as well as whichever other players depart by way of the NBA Draft or transfer portal.
Alabama’s senior night game against Florida will tip off at 6 p.m. CT and will air on ESPN2.
