National Champion DB announces transfer to Alabama
The University of Alabama suffered a few blows in the defensive backfield after Nick Saban announced his retirement including star Caleb Downs who transferred to Ohio State. The Crimson Tide has kept it eyes open in the transfer portal. Coach Kalen DeBoer added a potentially, high impact player on Saturday.
Keon Sabb, who has three years of eligibility remaining after completing his redshirt freshman year for the 2023 national champion Michigan Wolverines, announced his decision to move to Tuscaloosa to enroll as a student-athlete at Alabama. He ranks as the No. 4 safety in the transfer portal per On3 Sports.
Sabb had 28 tackles, two interceptions and six pass break-ups. The 6-foot-1, 208-pound safety started in the national championship game against Washington where he graded out as the best coverage defender for the Wolverines per Pro Football Focus (81.3). He allowed three receptions on seven targets for 28 yards and had two pass break-ups.

The 30-day portal window opened for Michigan players after head coach Jim Harbaugh accepted the head coaching job with the Los Angeles Chargers. Other significant losses included secondary coach Steve Clinksdale (Chargers) and safeties coach Jay Harbaugh (Seattle Seahawks).

Sabb saw his increased role on the field this past season due to injuries to starting safeties, Makari Paige and Rod Moore. Both are returning to the Wolverines for the upcoming season. Sabb will compete to become a full-time starter in the Alabama secondary.
The Glassboro, New Jersey native moved to Williamstown High School for his junior season before transferring to IMG Academy. He received an offer from the former Alabama staff in 2021. Sabb’s DB coach at IMG during his senior season was Kobie Jones, who is entering his second year as graduate assistant at Alabama.
Sabb also has two younger brothers with offers from Alabama. Amari (’26 ATH) and Xavier (’27 WR). Both were in Tuscaloosa two weekends ago for Junior Day.
