At Alabama, the stakes are high every week. “The Process” that coach Nick Saban has built the program on dating back to his arrival in 2007 doesn’t take weeks off. In his mind, there’s no such thing as a sure thing. It’s a mentality that has helped the Crimson Tide win a lot of football games over the last 16 years, but it’s not always easy keeping everyone bought into the idea.

After back-to-back top-20 wins against Tennessee and LSU, the seven-time national championship-winning head coach — as he does every week — joined The Pat McAfee Show on Thursday afternoon. One topic of conversation that came up? Relief syndrome. Apparently, it’s a tough condition to overcome. Even Miss Terry — Saban’s wife — has been found guilty of looking ahead on the schedule.

In fact, Saban had to “straighten her out” on Sunday.

“I had to straighten her out this week with relief syndrome, too,” Saban told McAfee and company. “I wake up on Sunday morning, and she looks at me and says, ‘Man, it’s going to be hard playing at Auburn.’ I said, ‘What you talking about? Are you kidding me? We’ve got to play Kentucky this week, and then Chattanooga the next week. We’ll worry about that when we get to that.’”

OK, I can’t be the only one thinking that Miss Terry is playing chess, not checkers here, right? I mean, what better way to get Saban laser-focused and motivated for this weekend’s game than to act like you’ve fallen victim to the ever-dangerous “relief syndrome?” Saban is probably thinking, “If the Queen of Alabama football can get sucked into all this rat poison, the team has to be in danger of doing the same.”

We may never know, as I’m sure Miss Terry would never want to reveal her super-secret methods. Either way, whatever her approach has been at home, it’s worked. Alabama is a double-digit road favorite against a good Kentucky team, so whatever needs to be done to avoid Saturday turning into a trap game. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. CT, and the game will air on ESPN.
