On3 Sports No. 3 CB announces commitment to Alabama
Alabama added another significant piece to its 2024 signing class on Saturday.
Zay Mincey, Top 100 cornerback from Mainland High School in Daytona Beach, Florida, announced his commitment to the University of Alabama during the fourth quarter of the All-American Bowl in San Antonio. Mincey quietly signed during the Early Signing Period. He is the seventh defensive back to sign with the Tide in the ’24 class.
Mincey had trimmed the list of favorites to Alabama, Florida, Florida State and Miami. He visited Tuscaloosa twice including an official visit in October. Many expected Mincey to remain in the Sunshine State, but the momentum swayed in the Tide’s favor after an in-home visit with Nick Saban in December.
“It felt great just letting the world know where I’ll be spending the next 3-4 years,” Mincey said after his announcement. “It felt great. Every school offered a great opportunity. At the end I just felt ‘Bama.”
“I felt it in my heart. Coach Saban has proven himself beyond anyone. He’s developed and put a high number of DBs in the NFL. I know there are still things I need to work on, but I am just looking to get to work.”
Alabama has the No. 2 recruiting class in the country per the On3 Sports Industry Team Rankings. It has the best defensive back class. All seven DBs have signed with Alabama, and all are mid-year enrollees. Mincey will arrive in Tuscaloosa next week to begin his college career.

“It’s great coaches, a great coaching staff all-around, and they’re just winners,” Mincey said of the Tide earlier this week. “It was great when Coach Saban came out to the school. That was something that never happened at my school, and it showed seeing he cares to take enough time out of his day to come see me.”
The other defensive backs in the class include: Jaylen Mbakwe, five-star cornerback from Clay-Chalkville High School in Ala., Zabien Brown, Top 100 cornerback from Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif., Jameer Grimsley, Top 100 cornerback from Tampa (Fla.), Peyton Woodyard, four-star safety from St. John Bosco in Bellflower, Calif., Red Morgan, four-star safety from Central High School in Phenix City, Ala., and Dre Kirkpatrick Jr., three-star safety from Gadsden (Ala.) City.
