Alabama coach Nick Saban is plenty familiar with Derek Dooley. The former Tennessee head coach worked under Saban on two separate occasions. The first was at LSU when Dooley worked as the tight end (2000-02) and running back coach (2003-04). Dooley then followed Saban to the Miami Dolphins where he coached tight ends from 2005-06.

Now, it looks like the two coaches could reunite for the third time in Tuscaloosa. On Wednesday afternoon, a report from FootballScoop revealed that Dooley would join the Crimson Tide staff as a senior offensive analyst. That report hasn’t been confirmed by the University yet, but it looks to be heading that way.

Dooley has spent the last two seasons with the New York Giants in the NFL. He started off as an offensive assistant in 2020 but moved to tight ends this past season. Prior to that, he served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Missouri for two seasons. Keeping up with the back and forth between college and the NFL, Dooley coached wide receivers for the Dallas Cowboys from 2013-17.

Despite the constant back and forth, Dooley does have experience coaching in the SEC. In fact, he was the head coach for the Tennessee Volunteers from 2010-12 after taking over for Lane Kiffin, who left for USC after one season in 2009. In that three-year period, he led the Vols to an underwhelming 15-21 record (.417). His time as Lousiana Tech’s head coach from 2007-09 didn’t produce much better results. During that time, he went 17-20.

Still, Dooley is a well-respected coach who has plenty of experience coaching under Saban. Granted, the last time the two were together was 2006, but Saban believes there are benefits to bringing in coaches you’re familiar with. That’s something he’ll definitely get in this situation.
