Alabama could be adding another big name to its coaching staff. On Thursday, reports coming from FootballScoop.com suggest that longtime defensive coordinator Todd Grantham is mulling over an offer to join Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa. Now, that’s not to say that Grantham would take over Pete Golding’s job. Instead, it’s being reported that he’d work closely with the defensive front seven.

Hiring Grantham would be an interesting move, to say the least. Since 2010, he’s been a defensive coordinator for four different Power 5 programs, including three in the SEC.

After coming up from the college ranks in 1999, he spent 11 seasons in the NFL. When he moved back to the college game, Grantham took over as the Georgia defensive coordinator in 2010 and spent four seasons in that role. He was also the defensive play-caller for Louisville (2014-16), Mississippi State (2017) and, most recently, Florida (2018-21). Unfortunately, he was unable to make it through the entire 2021 season before being relieved of his duties due to poor defensive play from the Gators.

The offer to join Alabama’s staff isn’t Grantham’s only option though. Reports say he currently has multiple suitors, but the Crimson Tide are the favorites to land his services. Here’s an excerpt from On3 newsdesk reporter Barkley Traux about Grantham’s most successful season as a defensive coordinator:

“Grantham’s best work as defensive coordinator might have been in 2017 when he was leading the defensive charge at Mississippi State. With his 3-4 defensive scheme, he took a Bulldogs’ run-stopping unit that had ranked below 100 and turned the Bulldogs into the top-10 national rankings. That year, Grantham was a Broyles Award semifinalist that year for his work with the Bulldogs, an award that goes to the nation’s top assistant coach.”

Alabama has already made several staff changes this offseason. There have been four new on-field coaching additions, including Travaris Robinson (cornerbacks), Eric Wolford (offensive line), Joe Cox (tight ends) and Coleman Hutzler (special teams coordinator/outside linebackers). We’ve also seen several off-field analysts brought in, which includes Derek Dooley, Zach Mettenberger and Nick McGriff.
