Roster update: Five Alabama players change numbers before 2023 season
Alabama recently updated its online roster, eight days before the start of the 2023 football season, and several Crimson Tide players have new numbers before a new year kicks off.
Both of Alabama’s transfer portal additions at defensive back, Jaylen Key and Trey Amos, are in single-digit numbers now after joining the Crimson Tide football program earlier this summer. A couple of returning players, Kristian Story and Kobe Prentice, also opted to take a lower jersey numbers this fall. The final of the five changes was from true freshman wide receiver Jalen Hale, who shed No. 82 for one in the teens prior to his rookie year.

Alabama players who changed jersey numbers
4 – Kristian Story, DB (was No. 11)
6 – Jaylen Key, DB (was No. 22)
6 – Kobe Prentice, WR (was No. 80)
9 – Trey Amos, DB (was No. 23)
14 – Jalen Hale, WR (was No. 82)
Some of these moves were most likely made for special team purposes. For instance, Story can now play on a coverage or return unit with wide receiver Malik Benson, who will wear No. 11, while Key can line up alongside running back Justice Haynes (No. 22). However, Key and Prentice cannot be on the field at the same time with their new jersey numbers.
Alabama will kick off the 2023 season against Middle Tennessee on Saturday, Sept. 2.
