Former Alabama wide receiver John Metchie is now a member of the Houston Texans. During the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft on Friday night, the talented pass-catcher from north of the border was selected No. 44 overall after a successful three-year stint in Tuscaloosa.

The Texans are a franchise currently in rebuild mode, but having a talent such as Metchie on the roster should provide plenty of benefits. First off, he’s a great guy to have in the locker room. Plus, his ability to be a volume receiver who can win on the short-to-intermediate routes will provide whoever starts at quarterback with a safety blanket.

Back in college, his career got off to an exciting start after he was named A-Day MVP as a freshman in 2019.

During that spring game, he brought in a team-leading 5 catches for 133 yards. That had Alabama fans excited about his future, but having four future first-round receivers in front of him on the depth chart prevented a significant impact in Year 1. That season, he only had 4 receptions for 23 yards.

The two years following that slow season were quite different.

Metchie began his second year as the team’s No. 3 receiver behind DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle. But once Waddle went down with an ankle injury against Tennessee in Week 5, Metchie was thrown into a near-every-down role. Luckily, he was ready to step up and chipped in 55 catches for 916 yards and 6 touchdowns.

He saved his best performance for last though, especially in the latter parts of his final collegiate season. Despite a slow start in 2021 due to a nagging injury from the spring, Metchie began to heat up around the Texas A&M game in Week 6.

Over the first five games, he had only come up with 27 catches for 275 yards and 2 touchdowns. He then went on a 7.5-game stretch where he had 69 catches for 867 yards and 6 scores before suffering a season-ending knee injury against Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.

Coming out of high school, Metchie was a lower-rated prospect. He was a four-star player who was ranked as the nation’s No. 286 overall player, No. 46 wide receiver and No. 6 player from the state of New Jersey, according to the On3 Consensus rankings.
