Less than a week after taking over as Alabama football’s next head coach, Kalen DeBoer and his new staff have landed their first commitment.

On Thursday, Washington quarterback transfer Austin Mack announced that he has committed to the Crimson Tide. Mack is the first transfer portal addition for Bama since the retirement of head coach Nick Saban.

After redshirting this past season, Mack will have four years of eligibility remaining when he arrives on Alabama’s campus.

Although Mack is a Class of 2023 quarterback, he was originally in the Class of 2024. The Folsom (Calif.) native committed to Washington last February before reclassifying up a class a couple of weeks later. He finished the 2023 recruiting cycle as the No. 16 quarterback in the On3 Industry Rankings, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

In his junior season of high school, Mack led his team to a 12-2 record and the CIF Sac-Joaquin Division I championship. The 6-foot-6, 226-pounder completed 269-of-382 passes (70.4 percent) for 3,498 yards, 40 touchdowns and five interceptions in his final year of high school ball.

He did not see any playing time this past season at Washington, which had Heisman Trophy finalist Michael Penix Jr.

Mack now joins a quarterback room that features 2023 starter Jalen Milroe, redshirt sophomore Ty Simpson, and redshirt freshman Dylan Lonergan. Five-Star Plus+ quarterback and true freshman Julian Sayin, who joined the team for bowl practice last month, is also in the talented room.
