Alabama’s defensive staff has made multiple moves this offseason, moving on from defensive backs coach Colin Hitschler, promoting analyst Chuck Morrell to inside linebackers coach, and most recently, hiring Jason Jones as assistant defensive backs coach.

Jones is an Alabama alum, graduating from UA with an undergraduate degree in 2001 and a master’s degree in 2005. He was a two-year starter at defensive back for the Crimson Tide, and was a member of the 1999 SEC championship team.

Speaking to reporters at the Senior Bowl in Mobile on Tuesday, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer spoke about the hiring of Jones.

“It kind of surprised me when I brought his name up to a few members of the coaching staff,” DeBoer said. “Didn’t realize there were as many connections, and when I dove into those connections a little bit more, just the same things kept coming out about who he is as a person, how great he is. It’s all facets, the recruiting, the X’s and O’s, just with the player development piece.”

Jones got his coaching start as a graduate assistant at Alabama, before being hired by Tulsa as his first official coaching job in 2005. He then spent time coaching at Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Florida Atlantic, Indiana, and North Carolina across his 20-year career before landing back in Tuscaloosa.

“Then him being local and someone who is an alum as an added bonus. It didn’t have to be that way, but it certainly something I know he was excited about, speaking on his behalf too, there,” DeBoer said. “Just an all-around team player in everything. We were looking for the right kind of combination as we work into the defensive backs and the coaching of that group as a whole. We love what we got there with Mo Linguist and now Jason Jones.”

Jones will assist coaching defensive backs with Linguist, who strictly coached the cornerbacks last season while Hitschler coached the safeties.
