MOBILE, Ala. – The offseason has officially arrived for Alabama, and with that comes talk of the Crimson Tide’s quarterback battle. It will dominate articles, message boards, social media and everywhere in between in the coming weeks and months before the Crimson Tide kicks off the 2025 campaign, and potentially beyond, depending on what happens.

Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer is not immune to the discussion, as on Tuesday, before he entered Hancock Whitney Stadium for his now-former players’ first Senior Bowl practice, he was asked about what is going to be the most talked about position on his roster.

How would DeBoer characterize the Crimson Tide’s quarterback room?

“Probably the biggest thing is there’s just not a lot of snaps that have been taken on a college football field,” DeBoer said. “But I also feel like the skillset’s there, there’s very strong strengths that we have and excited about them being similar in a lot of ways.

“Of course, everyone’s different. They’ve got the things that they bring to the table. But they all three just work together, and that’s really led to workouts already that they’re running that sound like they’ve been very efficient and got a lot of work done.

“But I’m excited about what they all bring to the table. Can’t wait to get back on campus here in February and work with them.”

With Jalen Milroe turning pro – and playing for the American team at the 2025 Senior Bowl – Alabama will have a new starting quarterback for the first time since the 2022 season.

The Crimson Tide currently has three scholarship quarterbacks on campus. Redshirt junior Ty Simpson is the most experienced, having been at UA for three years and serving as Milroe’s backup the last two. Alabama also brought in Washington transfer Austin Mack last offseason and signed Five-Star Plus+ prospect Keelon Russell back in December.

All three will compete for the starting job, but as January nears its end, Simpson has the edge over the other signal-callers. He is the oldest and has seen the most playing time at the college level. Choosing to wait his turn rather than transfer shows Simpson’s dedication to Alabama as well as his desire to come out on top of this quarterback competition.

“You certainly appreciate what he’s done,” DeBoer said of Simpson. “Just continued to work on what he can control, and that’s himself. Continued to build relationships to get ready for this chance that he has right in front of him. To not just step up as a leader because I think he’s been doing that, but to have that opportunity to step in and be the quarterback.”
