Alabama is looking to erase the sting of an upset loss at the hands of Vanderbilt with this weekend’s upcoming home game against South Carolina.

The Gamecocks currently sit at 3-2 on the season and 1-2 in the SEC, with a win over Kentucky and losses to LSU and Ole Miss. Alabama comes in at 4-1 after suffering its first loss of the season and aiming to get back in the win column.

On Wednesday, South Carolina head coach Shame Beamer joined the SEC coaches teleconference. Here’s what he said about facing the Crimson Tide:

Overall thoughts…

“Excited about the opportunity to go to Tuscaloosa and compete at Bryant-Denny Stadium, Saban Field, one of the great venues in all of college football. Big challenge, I have a ton of respect for Coach DeBoer and what he’s done in his career, and what he’s doing there in Tuscaloosa right now. He’s got a great team, as always. Our guys are looking forward to the challenge.”

On Mike Shula (South Carolina offensive analyst) returning to Alabama…

“No, Mike has been awesome. He has helped our program in so many ways. Obviously he works closely with the quarterbacks, so I know he’s done a great job working with our quarterbacks. Just a great staff member. Low ego, humble, hardworking, everyone in the building thinks the world of him. He’s been awesome, has helped us so much on and off the field. He’s been cool this week. You want to say it’s another week, he hasn’t talked about it. I’m sure the emotions will be high going back to his alma mater and where he was the head coach at one time, but just like the pro he is, he’s been very much a pro this week and doing his best to get our quarterbacks and our football team ready to play.”

On deciding how aggressive to be on 4th down…

“On those fourth downs, certainly I think you have to look at the down and distance. I’m sure a lot of those third downs were 3rd-and-7s and 3rd-and-8s. I would imagine a lot of those fourth downs are – not imagine, I mean, we did third down and fourth down today in practice and game planned for it. It’s more manageable situations. I don’t think you think so much about third down, fourth down, for us it’s, we as a team need to be better on third down. We haven’t been good enough on third down as an offense ourselves, so that’s a point of emphasis. We’ve got to stay on the field, convert on third down. I think Alabama, obviously the stats show it, they do a great job on third down. They do what they do, and they make it very tough on teams on third down.”

On Alabama’s defense in the last six quarters…

“I think you give Georgia credit, they got in a situation where they had to throw and come back and they hit some big plays. Vandy did a good job of just staying on the field on third down. Vandy was 12-of-18 on third down last week and they didn’t turn the ball over. When any team is that successful on third down and doesn’t turn the ball over they’re gonna be tough to beat. You still see them flying around, playing with great effort, and getting stops. Regardless of what they’ve done the last six quarters this is a really good defense and we know we have a big challenge in front of us.”
