Which position group will Ryan Grubb primarily be involved with as Alabama OC?

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer made a major change on his staff this offseason, bringing in longtime friend Ryan Grubb as the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator.
Grubb originally agreed to be Alabama’s offensive coordinator when DeBoer first took over last offseason, but he left to be the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks after just a few weeks on the job. This led DeBoer to promote tight ends coach Nick Sheridan to offensive coordinator, the role he held throughout the 2024 season.
DeBoer retained Sheridan even after the hiring of Grubb, naming him co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Following the Crimson Tide’s first spring practice on Monday, DeBoer was asked which position group Grubb will give the most attention to, given his background as an offensive line coach.
“I think Coach Grubb will always still be involved with the quarterbacks,” DeBoer said. “I’m just a strong believer that your play-caller has to be around the quarterbacks. But on your note, you’re very right, it allows him to do what you’d want a coordinator to do and that’s see every position.”

Grubb and DeBoer have a long history working together, with Grubb having coached both the offensive line and quarterbacks while working under him. Grubb served as both the offensive line coach and quarterbacks coach in different years under DeBoer at Sioux Falls and Fresno State, while only coaching quarterbacks under DeBoer at Washington.
“He certainly has a lot of history and background with the offensive line, so I think there’s eyes that start in certain spots when you’re a coordinator, beyond just the quarterback,” DeBoer said. “I think a lot of times his eyes – yeah he can see it all, he can see them line up on the perimeter, but he’s also really feeling and seeing and has an intuition on what’s going on with the offensive line up front.”
Grubb and Sheridan have a major decision on their hands this offseason as they work to decide who will start under center for the Crimson Tide in 2025. All three Alabama quarterbacks are in contention for the job — redshirt junior Ty Simpson, redshirt sophomore Austin Mack, and 5-star freshman Keelon Russell.
