5-star DL James Smith sees different Auburn team against LSU than he did against Penn State
Carver-Montgomery five-star defensive lineman James Smith on Saturday visited Auburn for the LSU game. It was the third Auburn game he’s attended this season.
It also was the best. Auburn jumped out to a 17-0 lead before LSU stormed back to win, 21-17.
“I liked the atmosphere,” Smith said. “I liked all that. The lights and stuff … the night games … I like that. I liked their energy. They came out hard. They really wanted to play. Big game.”
Smith noticed a difference in the Auburn team against LSU than the one he witnessed two weeks before against Penn State. Against the Nittany Lions, Auburn looked anemic en route to a 41-12 loss. Smith said after that game that he expected more from the Tigers.
Smith sees different Auburn team than earlier in season
He saw a big difference in the team that lost to LSU.
“They actually wanted to play,” Smith said. “They actually wanted to (win).”
Smith also saw a different defensive line against LSU.
“They did good,” he said. “They did their thing today. Marcus (Harris) did his thing. He stopped the run and had a couple sacks. No. 25 (Colby Wooden) and 99 (Jayson Jones), too. They stopped the run.”

Smith, who is 6-foot-3 and 295 pounds, is the No. 12 overall recruit in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus. He also ranks the No. 2 defensive lineman and No. 2 overall recruit in Alabama.
His teammate and close friend, fellow five-star Qua Russaw, also attended the Auburn-LSU game.
“(The atmosphere) was crazy,” Russaw said. “They fought hard — just fell short at the end. I was more pleased tonight (than after Auburn’s loss to Penn State) because in the beginning they looked different. In the second half, they still put up a fight. They had a few drives that didn’t go their way. They still fought hard, though.”
