BIG CAT COMMIT: 5-star WR Perry Thompson flips commitment from Alabama to Auburn
Five-star wide receiver Perry Thompson has flipped his commitment from Alabama to Auburn.
Thompson, who is from Foley, Ala., announced his decision on Saturday during Auburn’s Big Cat recruiting event. He had been committed to Alabama for more than a year.
“The whole coaching staff, they are great,” he said. “They make me feel like family. I love it, for real. The coaches, the environment .. everybody makes me feels like family.”
Thompson had been considering flipping his commitment to Auburn since an official visit in June. He left the Plains on June 11 with the Tigers tied at the top with the Tide.
“They are at the top with Alabama,” Thompson said. “(Auburn) is up there. They are right there with Alabama.”
Coaches big reasons for Thompson’s commitment
Two big reasons for Thompson’s change of heart are Hugh Freeze and wide receivers coach Marcus Davis. He has very close bonds with both.
“Coach (Hugh) Freeze, cool guy,” Thompson said. “He’s like laid back a lot so it’s a good bond between me and him.”
Freeze, Thompson said, is more active in his recruitment than any other head coach.
“Every day,” Thompson said of how often he communicates with Freeze. “I like it because usually head coaches don’t really reach out to you like that every day, but he’s different.”

So is Davis, as well as Trovon Reed.
“Coach Davis, we have a good bond,” he said. “My uncle has a good bond with him too. We just have a strong connection with him and Trovon Reed.”
Thompson said there are many other reasons he chose Auburn.
“I know I can come in and start as a freshman,” he said. “They’re going to have good coaches that can develop me to go to the NFL, and really just the family feeling.”
Big recruiting win for Auburn
Thompson, who is listed at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, is ranked the No. 29 overall recruit in the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He also ranks the No. 8 wide receiver in the country and No. 3 overall recruit in Alabama.
Thompson’s decision gives Auburn commitments from two of the four five-star recruits in Alabama. Auburn on Wednesday flipped five-star linebacker Demarcus Riddick from Georgia.
Auburn now has 14 commitments, including three wide receivers. The Tigers also have commitments from four-star receiver Bryce Cain and four-star receiver Malcolm Simmons. Simmons committed to Auburn earlier on Saturday.
