Auburn basketball, Texas Tech assistant Corey Williams finalizing deal
AUBURN — Auburn basketball and Texas Tech assistant coach Corey Williams are finalizing a deal that will bring Williams to Auburn to join Bruce Pearl’s staff and replace the departed Wes Flanigan, Auburn Live has learned.
The hiring and announcement appear imminent as of Friday morning. Corey Williams will join Steven Pearl and Ira Bowman as the third full-time on and off-campus assistant coach on Pearl’s staff.
Friday 1:32 p.m. update: Auburn makes the hire of Williams official.
“We are very fortunate to be able to attract a coach with the kind of experience, character and reputation as Corey Williams,” Pearl said. “Not only was he a great college and pro player, but Corey is also a terrific coach and an even better person. A Macon, Georgia, native, he and his family are excited about moving to Auburn and being closer to home. It’s going to be a great fit with our Auburn Family.”
“I want to thank God and Coach Pearl for an amazing opportunity to join his staff,” Williams said. “Coach Pearl is a proven winner in every sense of the word. My family and I look forward to being a positive attribute to his staff, the university, and community. I am truly thrilled and look forward to Coach’s mentorship and helping him win more championships in the near future.”
Friday 11:51 a.m. update: Williams updated his Twitter bio to include Auburn Men’s Basketball and a new header showcasing the move to Auburn.
Auburn Live reported on April 17 that Williams was the frontrunner and an announcement was expected soon. Pearl conducted numerous interviews since Flanigan’s departure, making a relatively quick decision to hire Williams.
Williams has spent the last two seasons at Texas Tech. The previous two seasons, Williams coached at Arkansas under head coach Eric Musselman.

The rest of the Auburn support staff is expected to remain unchanged, featuring Chad Prewett (Director of Operations/Chief of Staff), Mike Burgomaster (Recruiting Coordinator/Assistant to the Head Coach), Marquis Daniels (Director of Player Development), Ian Borders (Video Coordinator), Damon Davis (Director of Sports Performance), Clark Pearson (Senior Athletic Trainer) and Maddux Jeffreys (Assistant Director of Operations), Geoff Gray (Grad Assistant) and Bryant Smith (Student Assistant).
However, there could be more additions to the basketball coaching staff before next season. In January, the NCAA approved the ability for basketball programs to hire two new full-time on-campus assistant positions. That change will go into effect on July 1 of 2023.
