Auburn commit connects with new D-Line coach Jeremy Garrett, locked in with Tigers
Brenton Williams, Auburn’s 3-star edge commit from nearby Opelika (Ala.), already has spoken twice with new Tigers defensive line coach Jeremy Garrett.
“I actually had an offer from him when he was at Liberty,” Williams told Auburn Live. “He said while he was at Liberty, ‘I knew you weren’t going to end up there.’”
The reason for that: Garrett, hired last week by the Tigers after coming with Hugh Freeze from Liberty, figured Power 5 schools would eventually come calling for Williams. And he was right.
Williams, the No. 25 recruit in the state of Alabama for On3, recently emerged as a Tigers priority. He backed off his Coastal Carolina verbal Nov. 17 after picking up multiple offers this fall. They came from programs such as Penn State, Michigan State, Missouri and, of course, Auburn.

He committed to the Tigers on Nov. 28.
Freeze was hired a few days later.
According to Williams, he hasn’t been specifically told he has a spot in the 2023 Auburn class, but his conversations with Garrett lead him to believe that is the case.
“He told me about his background, and we talked about my film. He likes my film,” Williams said. “I knew him a little bit from when he was at Liberty. He’s a good coach. I could tell he really came in to work. He’s ready to get the show back on the road. He was like, ‘I’m looking forward to coaching you.’ He said to come in and work and that effort wouldn’t be a problem for me. He said he’s been to the league and ‘I know how to get you there.’”
Williams described those phone calls with Garrett as “reassuring.”
Addition, he is impressed with Garrett’s background.
“He played at Ole Miss,” Williams said. “He has NFL experience. It’s a great background.”
Williams told Auburn Live he “definitely” is locked in with the Tigers.
He will officially visit Auburn either next weekend or the weekend after, then sign Dec. 21. He’s an early enrollee.
