AUBURN — Freshman forward Jahki Howard will enter the NCAA transfer portal after one season at Auburn.

Howard was a 4-star recruit and No. 70 overall player in the 2024 class according the On3 Sports player rankings.

Playing in 21 games as a true freshman, Howard averaged 4.2 points per game and 1.1 rebounds per game. In December, Howard had back-to-back double-digit scoring games of 13 and 11 points against Richmond and Ohio State. Howard also had six points and four rebounds against Purdue.

Howard played 11 of 18 SEC regular season games, and only played against Ole Miss, Alabama State and Creighton in the postseason. His best game in SEC play came in Auburn’s loss at Texas A&M, when he played 12 minutes and finished with four points and four rebounds.

Impact of Jahki Howard’s decision

With the likely return of Chad Baker-Mazara at the “three” position, the same position Howard was playing and backing up Baker-Mazara this past season, it makes sense for Howard to move on. A talented player with elite jumping ability and a good outside shot that’s getting better, Howard will have plenty of suitors and will probably be a good player somewhere.

Howard did have off-the-court issues. There was the altercation with Ja’Heim Hudson on the team plane traveling to Houston in November, and walking off the court in the middle of the home game against Tennessee after a tongue-lashing from Bruce Pearl. The Auburn staff believed in Howard’s abilities, but attempting to keep him happy behind Baker-Mazara, and working through some of Howard’s attitude issues for another season created a scenario where both parties likely needed to part ways.
