With the news of Hugh Freeze taking over as the Tigers’ head coach, Auburn is expected to retain running back coach Carnell “Cadillac” Williams. Williams, of course, has been the acting head coach since the dismissal of Bryan Harsin.

Barring unforeseen circumstances, he’s expected to remain at Auburn and be an important piece in bridging the gap and rebuilding Auburn.

Williams arrived at Auburn as the running back coach in 2019. He survived the cut from Gus Malzahn’s firing and was retained by Bryan Harsin.

Williams’ football career as a player and coach

Cadillac’s career as Auburn needs no introduction. From 2001-2004, Williams had 3,831 yards and 45 touchdowns. He broke the Auburn record for most career rushing attempts with 741.

Williams had over 1700 all-purpose yards and 12 touchdowns in 2004 when Auburn went undefeated.

He was then drafted 5th overall in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft.

Williams bounced around from Henderson State to the University of West Georgia before taking the running back job at IMG Academy. He has been the running back coach at Auburn since 2019.

Recruiting under Williams

Williams helped secure the commitment of former 4-star running back DJ Williams in 2019. Williams, while his career at Auburn didn’t pan out, was a breakout player as a freshman and won SEC Freshman of the week against LSU.

In 2020, Williams helped land the jewel of the class in 4-star running back Tank Bigsby. Cadillac has coached Bigsby to 2,840 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns on the ground. He has also added 58 catches for 449 yards.

In 2021, Williams helped land 3-star hidden gem Jarquez Hunter out of Mississippi. In 2022, Williams helped land 4-star Georgia back Damari Alston. Now, Williams has 4-star in-state running back Jeremiah Cobb on the commit list for the 2023 class.

Future position somewhat unknown

As of right now, it is unknown what titles will be attached to Cadillac Williams. He is expected to go back to being the running back coach, but will he also have a promotion as well? That remains to be seen. He is expected, however, to be retained with new head coach Hugh Freeze.
