Auburn welcomes the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers to Jordan-Hare a stadium on Saturday as a 7.5 point favorite to win the game. The line comes as somewhat of a surprise to those who follow opening point spreads.

With what Auburn has gone through in 2022, any lopsided line on Auburn’s side would be more surprising.

It will be Carnell Williams’ third game as interim head coach and his second home game. The Tigers were expected to be favored over a school that shouldn’t have a chance to win. The line, however, is closer than some may have expected.

There’s a reason for that.

Western Kentucky has high-powered offense

Western Kentucky doesn’t have the level of talent that Auburn does, but it has plenty on the offensive side to do some damage. The Hilltoppers are 14th in the country in total offense averaging 484 yards per game.

Auburn, on the other hand, is not good on the offensive side, and appears to be regressing throwing the football and in scoring points. While that is happening, the Tigers’ defense has been holding opponents to lower points as well.

The matchup isn’t one that will be on the national radar. It will however be a tough game for Auburn no matter how the talent compares. Auburn is not in a situation to have to score a lot of points.

The Hilltoppers put up 73 points in one game this season. They also have a win against UAB.

The bottom line, this is a dangerous matchup at this point in the season with all of the drama going on around Auburn’s program. The single-digit line makes more sense as the national oddsmakers don’t expect Auburn to be able to outscore any of its opponents.
