Ze'Vian Capers

Ze’Vian Capers apparently isn’t going anywhere after all.

Capers, a third-year receiver for the Tigers who announced Nov. 1 he would enter the transfer portal Dec. 5 during the new portal window, told Auburn Live on Friday morning he now plans to stay at Auburn.

“Yes I do plan on staying at Auburn,” Capers said via Twitter Direct Message. “I’ve decided to come back because (new Tigers coach) Hugh Freeze has a great track record with developing quarterbacks and using big-body receivers in his offense and I know I would thrive in his offense. The next wave of receivers are all talented and we have what it takes to bring a national championship back to Auburn.”

Auburn has not yet named its next receivers coach.

Capers was a touted receiver recruit when he signed with the Tigers

Capers, listed at 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, came to Auburn nearly three years ago as a touted 4-star recruit from Alpharetta (Ga.) Denmark in the 2020 class. He was ranked as the No. 19 prospect in Georgia, No. 26 receiver and No. 151 overall recruit nationally in the On3 Consensus.

But at Auburn, Capers had only one reception this season for 16 yards. His best season came as a true freshman when in 2020 he showed promise while catching seven passes for 77 yards and a score.

All told, Capers has 14 receptions for 147 yards and one touchdown at Auburn.

While at Denmark High, Capers initially committed to Arkansas but then-Auburn coach Gus Malzahn and former receivers coach Kodi Burns worked hard to get him to flip. He finished his senior year of high school with 45 receptions for 922 yards and 10 touchdowns and was named all-state. That followed a junior season in which he recorded 60 catches for 1,182 yards and 11 scores.
