After opting to redshirt, and then opting to enter his name into the portal in the next available window, Landen King has withdrawn his name according to On3’s Matt Zenitz.

The sophomore tight end turned receiver was recently removed from the Auburn roster.

King had one catch for 24 yards this season. The catch came against Penn State, and was one of the few big offensive plays for the Tigers in a blowout loss. He has 6 receptions for 83 yards and one touchdown at Auburn. His one touchdown came in overtime against Alabama.

King adds depth to a receiver room low on numbers

Assuming King is restored to the roster and available to join the team again, he will add more depth to a receiver room that has now lost three former 4-star receivers in Ze’Vian Capers, Tar’Varish Dawson, and JJ Evans.

King, a former 3-star tight end, made the switch to receiver to be somewhat of a situational player. He did not get the playing time he expected, however and decided to take a redshirt.

King told Auburn Live his reasoning for the move in early October. The lack of substantial playing time this season was part of the reason for him making this decision. He also said he was having some health issues without going into specifics. Those issues caused him to lose a little weight and possibly limited his ability.

Transfer portal rules and regulations

The NCAA transfer portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship no longer has to be honored. In other words, if a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school is not obligated to provide a scholarship anymore.
