Auburn basketball will hang another regular season championship banner
For the fifth time in the history of Auburn basketball, the Tigers are SEC regular season champions.
The Tigers (26-4, 14-3) defeated Mississippi State 81-68 in overtime on Wednesday night in Starkville to seal the deal. The win gives Bruce Pearl his second SEC regular season championship at Auburn after leading the 2017-18 team to a share of the title with Tennessee.
They join the 1928, 1960, 1999 and 2018 Auburn teams that claimed regular season titles.
The win at Mississippi State brings back memories of the 1998-99 team that played at Mississippi State in the final regular season game of that season. Tigers’ All-American Chris Porter hit a go-ahead three from the corner in the final seconds of that game, giving Auburn the three-point win. That team also won the regular season championship, and was Auburn’s last outright SEC regular season title.

This marks Pearl’s seventh conference championship during his 18-year career at Milwaukee, Tennessee and Auburn. And for only the second time in Pearl’s career, he’s won 14 conference games. The last and only other time was the 2007-08 Tennessee team that finished 14-2 in league play, and going 31-5 overall after a Sweet Sixteen loss in the NCAA Tournament.
This year’s team can win 15 conference games for the first time in Pearl’s career, and accomplish an outright title, with a win at home against South Carolina to end the season. A win on Saturday would also mark the Tigers’ first undefeated season inside Auburn Arena.

Auburn’s success this season marks an incredible five-year run for the basketball program. The Tigers’ 120 total wins is tops in the league over the last five seasons. In the history of the program, Auburn had one 25-win season. That came during the 1998-99 season.
In the last five seasons, the Tigers have hit the 25-win mark four times.
