Brief thoughts on Auburn's NCAA Tournament loss to Yale, personnel moving forward
AUBURN -- What an unfortunate ending to a really, really nice season for Auburn basketball. For the fourth time in seven seasons, the Tigers brought home a championship after winning the SEC Tournament for the second time under Bruce Pearl. The second tourney title evens things up alongside the two regular season titles under Pearl. But despite how consistent this team has been all season, entering the tournament as a Top-10 offensive and defensive team per KenPom analytics, Friday's loss to Yale is awfully tough to swallow. It was Auburn's first loss outside of Quad I all season long, and it never should have happened. The Tigers held a 10-point lead with 7:27 remaining in the game. From that point forward, Auburn made just three shots and committed six turnovers. Of those six turnovers, they came from six different Auburn players. Yale only hit four shots during that time period, but two were threes, but the Bulldogs also added 10 points from the free throw line. Auburn scored just two points from the line during that final time period. All of that added up to Yale outscoring Auburn by 12 over the final 7:27 to win by two. It was a shocking development. Yale head coach James Jones called it the best win in the history of the basketball program. Pearl, meanwhile, called it one of the most disappointing losses of his career.
