AUBURN — “Flip the script” has been a message during the spring for the entire Auburn football team, but the wide receiver room seems to be taking this even more personal.

Camden Brown told the media on Wednesday about all of the messages that Hugh Freeze implements during his team meetings, but said that this one sticks with him the most. The sophomore said that changing the narrative of this program is one of their main goals this spring.

“…Right now, we’ve got to change the narrative and that’s what the main focus is right now,” Brown said. “That’s with anything, we’ve got to change the narrative with the quarterback situation, with the receiver situation, with the (offensive) line situation…”

Brown had just nine receptions at receiver this past season with two touchdowns and 149 total yards, but is making an impact quickly in spring practices, catching a touchdown pass in the first scrimmage. The 6-foot-3 sophomore prefers a tempo offense and is enjoying adjusting to the run-pass option offense that Auburn is implementing. Brown is also predominately taking reps in an outside receiver role this spring.

“Year two is going great so far,” Brown said. “I’m more comfortable, going a little bit faster. I remember last year I wasn’t (as) comfortable and confident as I am now. It was all just a ‘figure it out’ thing. I’m either going to do it or not… I feel better this year.”

“I was not always used to blocking a lot, but it’s cool. It’s great to buy into. I love both of the offenses… I’m just more comfortable in what I’m doing now.”

The room of receivers has a mix of classes and Brown said that it’s hard to pinpoint certain guys who have shown out this spring. The sophomore even pointed out certain walk-ons, Jake Kruse and Trent Mason, tipping his cap to the leadership aspect that they bring to the room.

“Everybody- we’re all buying in,” Brown said. “(Tar’Varish Dawson), we all know Var is going to go crazy. Koy Moore (and) Landen King have shown his improvement from day one to now. We’ve got all types of guys. Jay Fair is showing up. Omari Kelly is showing up.”

The rest of the Auburn offense

When it comes to the rest of the offense, each position has lots of room to improve and Brown believes that everyone is moving in the right direction during fall practices. Luckily, the coaches that this roster has behind them have the experience needed to ensure success.

Not only is Freeze an offensive mind, but offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Philip Montgomery has experience in a head coaching position as well. These two continue to mesh their preferred offensive styles into one to make a game plan for the roster.

“Buy ins occur because they were both head coaches,” Brown said. “That’s a great thing, when you have two head coaches in the picture. It matters to both of them, so it’s a good thing.”

When asked about the quarterbacks specifically, Brown told the media that he didn’t have much to say except for the fact that he is “just here make their job easy.”
