Class of 2025 in-state offensive tackle Spencer Dowland has committed to Auburn football.

Dowland, who attends Athens High School, announced his decision Saturday on social media. His commitment comes after visiting Auburn for its season opener against UMass.

“I just love the family feel at Auburn,” he told Auburn Live. “I also like the motivation of the program. Everybody is enthusiastic about the season. That and the hospitality are the main things for me … those are why I want to go to Auburn.

“They are really big on building a connection. (Auburn) has the family feel. They definitely are glad to see you and want to see you and always trying to build the connection.”

Dowland chose Auburn over early offers from Florida State, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Mississippi State, UAB, Western Kentucky and Troy, among others.

The visit on Saturday is Dowland’s second to Auburn in the past five weeks. He also attended the Tigers’ Big Cat recruiting event on July 29.

Big Cat was big for Dowland

It was after the visit for Big Cat that Dowland knew he wanted to commit to Auburn.

“It was a week or two after Big Cat that I knew,” he said. “I got to thinking about it and I decided that I’m not going to get the feeling I have at Auburn anywhere else. I just knew that I should go ahead and do it.”

Dowland has built strong bonds with Auburn coaches and support personnel. It starts with Hugh Freeze and trickles down to offensive line coach Jake Thornton, offensive analyst Kendall Simmons and even director of player personnel AK Mogulla.

“I like Coach Thornton and I really like Coach Simmons,” he said. “Coach Simmons is someone who has been there and done it. I feel like he’s really going to help get me to the next level. I really like him.

“And AK (Mogulla), I love AK. He’s answered every question we’ve had and explained everything so well. He’s made everything very easy for me and my family.”

Dowland is the third commitment in Auburn’s 2025 class. All three are from the state of Alabama. He joins Opelika three-star defensive lineman Malik Autry and Highland Home four-star outside linebacker Jakaleb Faulk.

“I’m done,” he said. “I think Auburn is where I need to be. I feel great about my decision to commit to Auburn.”

Dowland is listed at 6-foot-6 and 290 pounds. He projects as an offensive tackle.
