Davis Daniel, a former Auburn pitcher from Montgomery, Ala. (St. James School) is now headed to the big leagues. On Saturday, just a few hours before Auburn baseball’s super regional game against Oregon State, Daniel was called up to the Los Angeles Angels.

He becomes the 57th major league player in Auburn baseball history.

Daniel is Butch Thompson’s 20th MLB pitcher

Auburn baseball Head Coach, Butch Thompson, has had a prolific career with pitchers. Daniel makes his 20th pitcher to make it to the MLB. Thompson took over as the head man for Auburn in 2016, but has had 14 pitchers make it to the big leagues since 2014.

Daniel moves up after being integral part of last Auburn playoff run

The former Tiger appeared in 17 total games as a freshman at Auburn in 2017. He then went on to make 19 appearances in 2018. That year, he was a key asset for Auburn’s super regional appearance. It was the Tigers’ first appearance since 1999.

As a sophomore Daniel only allowed five earned runs. He struck out 25 batters in his last six games as the relief pitcher. 5 of his innings in the decisive game three of the Gainesville Super Regional remained scoreless.

Three years after being drafted, Daniel earns his spot

Daniel was drafted on May 9, 2019. From there, he worked through the Angels’ farm system after starting his pro playing career with the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees. He started 9 games with the Bees in 2022. He went 3-1 with a 3.64 ERA in 47 innings.

Daniel will wear No. 78 and will dress out with Angels Saturday night as they take on the New York Mets. The Montgomery native will have a chance to continue his success at the highest level possible. This is big news on a night that the current Tigers will be attempting to make their way to Omaha.
