Coming from an Alabama family, QB Robby Ashford 'just loved to be different'
AUBURN — Just like many Alabama natives, Robby Ashford‘s house is divided: Auburn vs Alabama
Although his family is much more Tide-heady, the Auburn quarterback “just loved to be different.” One Christmas, his granny bought him a Bo Jackson jersey with a matching helmet. For him, the rest was history.
“There was just always something about Auburn,” Ashford said on Monday afternoon. “Auburn just always felt different for me and just felt special…”
Not only is Ashford’s family primarily Alabama fans, but he has a brother-in-law that played for the Tide. Damion Square played from 2009-2012 before he signed as an undrafted free agent for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013. The defensive tackle is currently a free agent.
“…I’ve been talking to my brother in law, he’s been talking smack, as he should,” Ashford said. “He played at Bama. It’s been good to see just how much this game brings our family along, too, just together, like it does for a lot of families. This game means everything, so it’s cool to just know I’m about to go out there and play in the Iron Bowl after years of just watching it…”

Robby Ashford is from Hoover, Alabama, but began his collegiate career in Eugene, Oregon, where he spent the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Once he entered the portal, the quarterback knew that Auburn was where he wanted to be.
“…That’s (Auburn is) where I need to be and that’s where I want to be,” Ashford added in his interview on Monday. “Just Auburn and what it’s done for me now, just for the 10 or 11 months I’ve been here. It’s just been great because it’s been everything I thought of when I was a recruit. To see that all come to happen is just great…”
