Hugh Freeze remains open to portal QB despite 'improved' play this spring
AUBURN — Hugh Freeze talked about the Auburn quarterback situation for what seemed like the millionth time this spring following the 24-24 tie in the annual A-Day game.
It’s no surprise, as the Tigers’ search for a starting quarterback is nowhere close to being finished. Freeze has been open and honest about the quarterback situation all spring, pointing out inconsistencies and positives when he deems necessary.

So, how does Freeze feel about the quarterback situation now that spring camp is complete?
“I feel better than I did 15 practices ago,” he said. “I think from this point now until the end of fall camp, there’s so much that needs to happen for somebody to solidify being the guy. And I think all have improved, all are still inconsistent with some things.”
Robby Ashford earned Offensive MVP honors after throwing for 39 yards and rushing for 38 yards and a touchdown. Holden Geriner completed three passes for 17 yards, while T.J. Finley completed one pass for four yards.
When asked about Ashford specifically, Freeze offered some praise for the still-developing sophomore.
“I think Robby got better. He’s been fun to coach,” Freeze said. “He’s trying to change some of the things that have caused, at least me concern, about being a quarterback leader, whether it be body language or ball security, or demeanor in general.
“The way you talk, the way you talk to your teammates — I don’t know if anybody’s really challenged him the way like I did this spring with that and I thought all of them responded to our challenges, like ‘coach, just coach me.’ He’s got the capability of making some plays. I thought he threw a really good seam ball in those conditions.”

Having said all that, it’s no secret that Auburn is in the market for a transfer portal quarterback, if the fit is right.
Freeze talked about needing a quarterback “that can make the throws in tight coverages.” He wants “consistency” from his quarterbacks, adding none have “proven” anything in that regard, yet.
“I’m not saying they can’t and I’m not down on them,” Freeze said.
Hugh Freeze reiterated on Saturday, after being asked yet again about whether or not the Tigers are in search of a transfer portal quarterback, that yes, they indeed are open for business in that regard.
“The transfer portal opens soon and we’re open to any position that will help us improve our team, as long as they fit into our culture, and that includes the quarterback room,” he said. “People make a big deal about that, but the bottom line is you are constantly — competition is helpful for those that handle it right. And those that don’t, they aren’t going to be winners for you anyway. We’re open.
“Do I think we can win some games with what we have? Yes, I do. I think we can win games with these guys. But should a guy that comes available that’s a dynamic guy that we think is a proven guy at doing that, I think we would have to at least look at that.”
