AUBURNHugh Freeze spoke to the media on Tuesday directly after the Tigers’ first full-pad practice of the spring. There were several different themes coming from the first media viewing, but injuries have piled up a bit as things get rolling. Based on the viewing, these seem to be mostly minor, but it has hampered a few things in terms of preparation and install–which is highly important this time of year.

While some of the banged up players are going through drills and other things, there are several who are missing the live action portions of practice.

“I mean, you know, right now we’re without Connor Lew, Demarcus Riddick, X (Xavier Chaplin) at left tackle, Keldric (Faulk), Durell (Robinson),” Freeze said. “Shoot. There’s just some guys we’re depending on that we’re going to be without for pretty much all of spring.”

Freeze pointed out that the current NCAA schedule could use some refining, which would help Auburn and other schools with spring injuries and recovering from the past season.

“Yeah, (injuries) are the unfortunate thing in spring and why I keep lobbying and will continue to lobby probably until I retire to do away with spring ball and give us OTA’s in June where we can put pads on there for like 10 days–where you have everybody.”

“And, you know, I wish that wasn’t the case, but every year you’re going to have these surgeries in January or February from the season, and then you’re without those guys. I wish we could just train and do our individual work that we did, like in February, and then us have some OTA’s in June, during that first part of June where you have everybody. Even after the portal and all that, you really have your whole team or high school kids that didn’t mid-year enroll, they would get the opportunity to do that too.”

Freeze mentioned a few others that Auburn is currently missing on the field.

“So, yeah, Hollis Davidson we’re without right now, and I’m sure there’s others, but some pretty key guys–Bryce Cain right now. So we’re without some guys, and that is what it is. But we’ll do the best we can getting them ready when they get back.”

Defensive backs Champ Anthony and JC Hart were also limited during the media viewing window.
