Welcome to in-state scout watch: a look at potential up-and-coming talent in the state of Alabama.

Auburn, under Hugh Freeze, has made the state of Alabama a priority (as he should). Several players always stand out, but there are some who emerge later than others.

We’re here to make sure you’re aware of them before that happens.

Today, we’re taking a look at Jaxon Roberts, an unranked 2025 athlete from Mobile (Ala.) Mobile Christian.

Schools starting to show interest

So far Roberts has received interest from a few schools and has been on some visits to those as well.

“I’ve been to Georgia Tech, Florida State, Jacksonville State, and I’ve been to Cincinnati,” Roberts said. “Most of these schools are telling me they really have interest in me and want to see me grow into a player. They’re very excited to see what I can do in the future and how I can help their programs.”

Several schools, Georgia Tech in particularly, have communicated with Roberts about making it to a camp in the summer in order to showcase his ability in front of the coaching staff.

At Florida State, defensive backs coach Marcus Woodson has communicated with him while on campus.

The schools Roberts has visited and many other schools are starting to schedule practice days to come and evaluate him in person according to the coaching staff at Mobile Christian High School.

Roberts plays a multitude of positions including safety and corner on defense and wide receiver on offense.

So far, schools have liked him on the defensive side of the ball.

“Analyzing the field and giving a diagnosis on what is going to happen before it happens,” Roberts said of his playing style. “Not scared to hit if I have to. Being a ball-hawk, I like to track the ball. I used to play outfield (in baseball). I can also play in the box if needed, like nickel. Have played some linebacker here and there.”

Due to a GPA over a 4.0, Roberts will have the opportunity to be an Ivy League recruit as well as a Power-5 recruit.

Roberts would admittedly have some interest in Auburn should the Tigers decide to recruit him.

With Zac Etheridge being his area recruiter and a secondary coach, he will see Roberts while evaluating in the Mobile area.

“My first camp ever was at Auburn, but that was in ninth grade,” Roberts said. “I went with my school. I like the history. One of my favorite quarterbacks, Cam Newton, I liked his style and the way he played. He was flashy, a good leader. And, Smoke Monday, a very good DB. Liked his play style. I like the way he covers receivers and he comes in to hit, he’s not scared to hit at all.”

Auburn Live evaluation notes

  • He is often seen in highlights as an intense blocker on the perimeter, but shows good playmaking ability as well. His tenacity as a blocker is a good early sign of physicality to come as he continues to grow into his frame.
  • Roberts shows good burst with the ball in his hands and has some open-field awareness as a ball-carrier.
  • As a defensive back, his burst helps get to where he needs to go on the field. His physicality helps as a tackler and in taking on blocks in the perimeter. He also has a better-than-average leaping ability when playing the ball in coverage.
