Auburn has not yet completed its staff under the direction of head coach Hugh Freeze, but it is close.

An early addition to the staff was essentially a no-brainer for Freeze. Jeremy Garrett is off and running as Auburn’s defensive line coach, a position of utmost recruiting importance for the Tigers.

Garrett is young and has not had too many coaching stops, but his stops have been interesting nonetheless. Freeze thought highly enough of him at Liberty to make him his first coaching hire at Auburn.

Here are some interesting facts you may or may not know about Garrett.

Playing Career

  • Garrett, a native of Senatobia, Miss., played defensive line for Ole Miss from 2004 to 2007. During that timeframe, Hugh Freeze had a run at Ole Miss as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator from 2006 to 2007
  • He was named to the All-SEC academic team while at Ole Miss. On the other end of the spectrum, he also won lifter of the year for his work in the weight room (Nice combination)
  • He also won the Chucky Mullins Courage Award. This is given to the Ole Miss upperclassman defender, “that embodies the spirit of Mullins — courage, leadership, perseverance and determination.” Mullins is a historic person at Ole Miss. The Alabama native was paralyzed making a tackle in a 1989 game against Vanderbilt.

Coaching Career

  • Garrett started out coaching in the high school ranks after earning his MBA from Harding University in 2010
  • He got a head coaching job at Ensworth High School in Nashville, Tennessee. He took that school to the quarterfinals of the 3A Tennessee playoffs. He was at Ensworth for eight years, but served only one year as head coach.
  • Not long after Ensworth, Garrett moved up to the Vanderbilt University as a defensive quality control analyst in 2019. He was close to the defensive line group for the Commodores that season.
  • After just one season at Vanderbilt, Garrett made another big jump up to the NFL to become the assistant defensive line coach for the Cleveland Browns.
  • While with the Browns, Garrett coached Myles Garrett, Olivier Vernon and Jadeveon Clowney. The Browns were one of four teams in the NFL to have more than one player with at least nine sacks. In his second year (2021), the Browns finished with the 5th best defense in the NFL.
  • Garrett was then hired by Liberty and Freeze. In one season as defensive line coach for the Flames, his defensive line led the nation in tackles for loss with 9.1 per game. The Flames were also 4th in the FBS in sacks averaging 3.4 per game.
