Hugh Freeze has found his wide receivers coach.

Marcus Davis, a four-year letter-winner at receiver for Auburn, will return to the school to coach the position he once played, according to Auburn Live’s Jeffrey Lee.

Davis, 28, is considered to be an up-and-comer in the coaching industry.

After finishing his playing career for the Tigers, he spent two seasons on then-coach Gus Malzahn’s staff in different off-field roles. In 2020, he was a grad assistant at Florida State. Then a break came when he landed his first full-time FBS job as receivers coach at Hawaii.

Davis returned to the South a season later when Georgia Southern coach Clay Helton hired him to coach receivers.

Now, he will be the youngest assistant on Freeze’s Auburn staff.

According to Auburn Live’s Justin Hokanson, it came down to Davis and Missouri assistant Jacob Peeler for the position. Freeze ultimately went with Davis. Sources indicate Peeler never received an offer.

Per sources, Davis fit several important criteria for Freeze, including the following:

  • Freeze and others view Davis as a rising star. He graded out as a 5-star with the Dave Bartoo analytics company.
  • He has strong ties to South Florida.
  • He’s an Auburn grad that fits Freeze’s culture.
  • He’s a strong person of faith.

Davis, a native of South Florida, played at American Heritage-Delray and was a 3-star recruit when he signed with the Tigers in 2013. In four seasons, he caught 83 passes for 650 yards and three touchdowns.

Here is Marcus Davis’ file from Georgia Southern’s official website.
