BREAKING: Maryland transfer tight end Rico Walker commits to Auburn
Maryland transfer tight end Rico Walker has committed to Auburn football.
Walker, who has three years of eligibility, announced his decision Monday on social media. He chose the Tigers over South Florida and Pitt.
Auburn’s use of the tight end position was a big factor in Walker’s decision.
“This is their first year, but just going off of the players that they had, especially in the tight end room, I would say they do a pretty good job with developing tight ends,” Walker said.
Walker, who is listed at 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds, projects as a hybrid tight end at Auburn.
“They see me more as Rivaldo (Fairweather), but they see that I can block a lot,” he said. “So, it’s like, ‘OK, we don’t have to take you out of the game when we need to block.’
“That’s one thing they love about me so much is my versatility. I can display what I can do passing wise. They love what they’re seeing on film.”
Walker’s commitment comes just a few days after an official visit to the Plains. He already was familiar with Auburn. He visited as a recruit and his father, Ricardo, played defensive line for the Tigers in the 90s.
“I mean, (my dad) just gave a pitch of what he experienced here being a player, stuff like that,” Walker said. “He talked about the SEC and about Auburn with the passion the fans have. That I would be loved if I came here.”
And now he is.
