Survive and advance. That’s precisely what Auburn did Thursday night.

The No. 9 seed Tigers played sharp on both ends for most of the game, made big 3-pointers during a huge second-half run and key foul shots late to seal it. The result was an exciting win over No. 8 seed Iowa in Birmingham, Ala.

Final score: Auburn 83, Iowa 75.

Forward Johni Broome led Auburn with 19 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks. Five other Tigers scored in double-figures with point guard Wendell Green leading that group with 15 points as he went 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Another guard, Tre Donaldson, also came up big; he went for 11 points and was 3 of 3 from 3-point range.

Additionally, KD Johnson, Jaylin Williams and Allen Flanigan each hit double digits.

Auburn improved to 21-12 while Iowa fell to 19-14.

The Tigers led by as many as 17 points midway through the second half before a furious Hawkeyes rally made things tight down the stretch. But Auburn was clutch at the charity stripe and that was key.

Bruce Pearl’s Tigers will play their second-round game Sunday.
