Takeaways: Bruce Pearl previews USC and their dangerous guard combo, plus issues a challenge to Auburn fans
AUBURN -- Despite a middling record, USC will come into Neville Arena to face Auburn with plenty of talent and expectations. The Tigers sit at No. 9 in the KenPom, with the Trojans sitting at No. 40. Bruce Pearl wasn't shy about what and who his team will compete against on Sunday, specifically the duo of freshman Isaiah Collier and Boogie Ellis. "We have our hands full preparing for what is probably one of the best combinations of two guards we'll see all year long," Pearl said. "Isaiah was the number one recruit in the country. We were recruiting him to Auburn. He's a top-5 consensus pick in the draft next year. He's a great downhill, pro point guard. He's got great size and length, great athleticism, great ability to finish...very aggressive player. Then Boogie Ellis is probably the best scoring guard we'll see. He lit us up for 28 last year and he's a tough cover. Those guys account for half their offense, so it will be very challenging for our guards and when our bigs can help out, they can help out. "USC is off to a disappointing start, they'd be the first to tell you that. They've had some tough losses against good basketball teams, but games where I'm sure they felt like they should have won. They have the talent to beat anyone on any night. We're working to get ready. I think after nine games...it feels like we've played 29 games because we've been on the road for six of the first nine. It'll be great to get back home and play in front of our fans." More from Pearl inside...
