In the state of Mississippi, one of the great honors for a high school football player is to make the Clarion Ledger Dandy Dozen — and this year two future Florida Gators are on the list.

They are: running back Kahnen Daniels of West Point and linebacker Jamonta Waller of Picayune.

Per the Clarion Ledger, the major newspaper in the Magnolia State, “The Dandy Dozen is the newspaper’s recruiting list. It is decided by conversations with national college football recruiting reporters, recruiting rankings, observations on the field, and individual success. The final list was determined by discussions among the sports staff.”

Here’s what the paper said about these two Florida commits:

The 2 Florida Gators commits are coming off big junior seasons

Daniels: “The Florida commitment and four-star recruit led Green Wave with 203 carries for 2,027 yards and 24 TDs in 14 games. Daniels helped the Green Wave (11-3) advance to the MHSAA Class 5A title game. The 5-11, 190-pound Daniels is the No. 10 recruit in the state and the No. 28 running back nationally.”

Waller: “The Florida commitment and four-star recruit is the No. 2 recruit in the state. Waller finished with 106 tackles, 24 for loss, 11.5 sacks, 31 quarterback hurries and a forced fumble in 15 games. The 6-2, 225-pound Waller is the No. 7 edge rusher and the No. 69 recruit nationally.”

Daniels, who committed to the Gators on April 10, said after officially visiting Florida in June, he planned to not visit any other schools moving forward.

“I went to Michigan (State) the other week but I still felt like Florida was my home. I’m locked in,” he said.

He seems to like the role Florida has for him in the Gators offense, as explained to Daniels by running backs coach Jabbar Juluke.

“He basically put my plays on a slide or whatever and showed me things that were similar,” Daniels said. “It really doesn’t change that much. We pretty much run the same offense.”

Waller committed to Florida on June 19. Although he’s listed as an edge, the Gators will play him in various spots, including inside backer.

Ole Miss continues to pursue Waller

The On3 Ole Miss site, OM Spirit, wrote this about Waller on July 23: “Ole Miss felt like it was in a great spot for Waller for most of the spring and summer. Then he abruptly committed to the Gators while on a visit in June. Pete Golding and Lane Kiffin are going to continue to recruit the Top 100 prospect until signing day, though. The urge to stay in-state might change if more high-profile players commit and/or flip to the Rebels. Until then, it appears he’s all Florida with Auburn lurking in the shadows.”
