2 Gators commits named Mississippi Mr. Football winners
What already was pretty clear before Thursday is official now: The Florida Gators have struck gold in the state of Mississippi this recruiting cycle.
The Mississippi High School Activities Association on Thursday announced the 2023 winners for the annual Mississippi Mr. Football awards. And two Florida commits were honored — 4-star edge/outside backer Jamonta Waller of Picayune Memorial and 4-star running back Kahnen Daniels of West Point.
Both are having terrific senior seasons.
Waller is the Mr. Football winner for Class 6A, the classification for the second-largest schools in the state.
Wrote the Clarion Ledger: “Waller has recorded 56 total tackles, nine sacks, 19 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and one blocked punt. Waller tallied four receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown. Picayune faces Forest Hill in the first round of the 6A playoffs on Friday.”

The winners were chosen by high school coaches and media in the state.
Both players committed to the Florida Gators earlier this year
Right now, lots of eyes are on Waller as Auburn has continued to make a push to flip him. He committed to the Gators in June and is the No. 78 overall recruit nationally for the On3 industry rankings.
Florida views him as a Harold Perkins (LSU) type of talent who can play edge or inside backer. Multiple Gators assistants are involved in this recruitment but edge coach Mike Peterson was the one who attended Waller’s game last week in Mississippi.
Daniels is the No. 22 running back nationally. He committed to the Gators over Mississippi State in April and appears to be fairly solid with his pledge. Florida running backs coach Jabbar Juluke is his primary recruiter.
