What the Gators are getting in Myles Johnson
Johnson is light on his feet and does a good job of changing direction when reacting to the ball. This is a prospect who plays running back as well, so that stands out right away. Johnson is fluid in his movements and productive when exploding into the backfield. Once a lane opens, he shows good acceleration and ends up in the stat sheet more often than not. That’s when Johnson is at his best, as his straight-line speed is better than most linebackers in his class. That aligns with his recent outdoor time of 11.15 in the 100M. That is impressive at 6-foot-1, 210 pounds.
I love Johnson’s ability to take on blockers and then disengage to wrap up the ball carrier. This is a throwback-type linebacker who has a reputation for playing around the line of scrimmage. He provides a pop at the point of attack and shows no hesitation when blockers approach him. Instead, he often gets the best of them before latching onto the ball carrier. Johnson is a forceful linebacker who will wake you up in a hurry if your awareness is lacking. His sophomore film is evidence of that.

Johnson is simply dialed in. When watching his film, he looks to always be on his toes and ready for what’s to come. He does a nice job of timing the snap when blitzing up the middle and processes things fairly quickly. It’s not often when you see Johnson being fooled on a play action or tackling the wrong opponent when getting into the backfield. He has the presence you want from a MIKE linebacker. You know what you are going to get from Myles Johnson.
This somewhat ties into the section above: Myles Johnson is simply what you call a football player. He is not overly flashy and does not back down from a challenge. Whether he is stepping up in the gaps or blitzing, the effort is always consistent. This is not a projection-type prospect who passes the eyes but does not have production. Johnson is always around the ball and does a good job of doing his role. That commitment has led to his consistency as a three-down linebacker. You can tell he loves the game. — GO’s Corey Bender
