The Florida Gators’ vaunted 2024 recruiting class took another significant hit Wednesday as 4-star defensive lineman Nasir Johnson of Dublin (Ga.) flipped his commitment to the Georgia Bulldogs.

He is the third Gators commit to flip since Saturday.

Previously, 4-star linebacker Jamonta Waller of Mississippi flipped to Auburn and 4-star cornerback Wardell Mack of Louisiana flipped to Texas.

Johnson, listed at 6-foot-4 and 300 pounds, is the No. 21 defensive lineman and No. 171 overall recruit nationally for the On3 Industry Rankings. He committed to the Gators during an official visit to Gainesville in June, but had been flirting heavily with the Bulldogs in the runup to his flip. Because of that, it is doubtful anyone at Florida was caught completely by surprise.

That said, the loss of Johnson leaves the Gators with a significant void in the 2024 class. They now do not have a single true defensive lineman committed. Five-star defender LJ McCray of Daytona Beach (Fla.) Mainland is listed as a defensive lineman but he told On3 and others the Gators have recruited him to play the edge position.

Elsewhere, Florida continues to recruit 3-star defensive lineman Michai Boireau of Georgia, who de-committed from the Gators in September, and Texas 4-star commit D’Antre Robinson of Orlando (Fla.) Jones, among others. Additionally, 4-star prospect Brien Taylor of Blinn College in Texas told Gators Onliine on Tuesday he will visit the Gators for the Florida State game next week then return two weeks later for an official visit. But right now, Georgia might be the team to beat for him, too.

The Florida Gators still have one of the best recruiting classes in the country — even without Nasir Johnson

Florida now has 19 commitments. The Gators were fourth in the On3 Industry Rankings before Johnson’s flip.

All in all, the class still is excellent even with the void on the defensive line.

Florida currently has three 5-five stars and 11 4-star recruits committed. Five-star quarterback DJ Lagway of Willis (Texas), who is having a huge senior season, is considered the jewel of the recruiting class with McCray not far behind him.

The early signing period is Dec. 20 and right now Gators coach Billy Napier and his staff will have to work hard for the Gators to not lose any more commitments.

Four-star edge Amaris Williams of Clinton (N.C.) is one player we are monitoring closely at this time. He has taken two visits to Ohio State this season and the confidence seems to be running high with the Buckeyes. Tennessee also is in the mix.
