4-star WR Somourian Wingo sets commitment date

St. Augustine (Fla.) 4-star wide receiver Somourian Wingo is the latest prospect to set a commitment date in July. The in-state pass catcher had previously told Gators Online he planned to make a silent commitment on July 15 and hold that decision to announce during the first week of the school year in August. However, plans have since changed. According to Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett, Wingo will pick between Florida, Miami, and South Carolina on July 17 at 2:00 p.m. ET.
Somourian Wingo is very familiar with Florida
Living a short drive away from The Swamp, Somourian Wingo has visited Florida multiple times. Wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales extended Wingo an offer last July after he competed in a 7-on-7 tournament held on campus. Wingo has visited UF twice this year and was also at almost every home last season. The frequency of visits has given Wingo a strong level of comfort with the surroundings and staff.
“That’s a huge factor,” Wingo said of the Gators earlier this month. “Just me knowing I’m going to be surrounded by a lot of people and I’m going to be developed. That’s another key factor as far as me making my decision.”
With a decision nearing, both Coach Gonzales as well as head coach Billy Napier have remained in contact with the Rivals300 pass catcher.
“Everything is going great. Conversations with (wide receivers) coach (Billy) Gonzales and (Billy) Napier have been smooth,” Wingo said. “We’ve really just been talking about working on building a relationship and staying tightly connected.”
Two programs have started to separate from the pack
Though Wingo named three finalists, the 6-foot-3, 180-pounder has recently stated that Florida and South Carolina stand out even more. The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine favors the Gators with odds of 87.2 percent, but South Carolina is one to monitor. The Gamecocks have been gaining footing in the last several weeks and have made this race an interesting one. He was in Colombia for his final offical visit on June 20, and has felt a strong push from the Gamecocks in the time following that trip.

“South Carolina definitely stepped up with the visit,” Wingo told Rivals. “The idea that everybody had was that there was nothing to do in South Carolina. But me going over there and them showing that there is stuff that we can do over there and have a lot of fun, but keep the main thing the main thing at the same time.”
As the decision date nears, Somourian Wingo has mentioned some of the factors that he plans to lean on to help him arrive at his pick. With official visits made to all of his finalists, Wingo will be able to use what he learned from speaking with the players for an extended period.
“The players’ perspective of the coaches and the people around,” said Wingo. “Seeing how it really is and seeing how I’ll be moving around with the people there for the next 3-4 years of my life. It’s really more so me getting to know the players and the people that I’m going to be surrounding myself with.”
The Rivals Industry, a weighted average of the four major recruiting services, ranks Somourian Wingo as the nation’s No. 139 overall player.
