Alijah Martin named to Jerry West award watch list
Alijah Martin is making the most of his final season of college basketball. The senior Florida Gators guard on Tuesday was named to the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year’s 10-player mid-season watch list, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced.
Martin, a Mississippi native, is a grad transfer from Florida Atlantic playing his first season at Florida. He’s averaging 15.6 points a game, which is second best on the team, while shooting 44.6 percent from the field. Additionally, Martin posts 5.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.8 steals a game. Per FloridaGators.com, “Martin has 17 double-figure scoring performances, including three 20-point outings and a 32-point showing against Southern Illinois. Martin tied UF’s O’Connell Center record with eight made 3-pointers in the outburst vs. SIU, as Martin’s 32 points also matched his career high.”
Another big outing for Martin came earlier this year at home. He had 18 points in a 73-43 win over Tennessee in the Gators’ first-ever victory over a No. 1-ranked opponent in Gainesville. Martin has helped guide Florida to an 18-3 start and No. 6 ranking entering Tuesday’s home game vs. Vanderbilt.

Martin, who is 6-foot-2, played four seasons at FAU and helped lead the Owls to the Final Four in 2023. He averaged double-figures in scoring each of his final three seasons with that program, but his scoring average this season would be a career high if he can maintain it. All told, Martin has 1,804 points and a career scoring average of 12.4 in college.
