Florida Gators EDGE Princely Umanmielen switches to No. 1 jersey
A third Florida player has switched to a single-digit number for 2023. Gators EDGE Princely Umanmielen announced Thursday that he will be wearing the No. 1 jersey this season after three years in 33.
Umanmielen led the Gators in sacks (4.5) and TFLs (9.5) last season, finishing with 39 tackles and 27 QB pressures. His PFF grade was 82.1, which ranks first among returning SEC EDGE rushers in 2023.

While previous UF coaches made a big deal about the No. 1 jersey, Gators Online has learned that the current staff does not treat it as a special number or reward. It’s no different than any other jersey.
Umanmielen joins wide receiver Caleb Douglas (No. 4) and tight end Arlis Boardingham (No. 8) as Gators who earned new numbers during the offseason. Now 17 players have single digits (see below).

Umanmielen taking the next step in his development
Heading into his junior season, Umanmielen has his sights set on producing on the field and getting drafted. His position coach, Mike Peterson, has seen a change in the talented EDGE rusher.
“Princely, he’s changed his body. I’ve been really, really, really impressed with him. We all know he can do everything on the field. We’ve been talking about the things away from football — taking care of your body,” Peterson said during spring practice. “How to watch tape. What are you watching? Your eyes. Man, it’s been great. Every day, I can pull a clip where he’s playing with effort. You watch practice today, he’s running all the way down the field. He’s the first one on the field, first one at practice. Just those little things. I talk to him about becoming a pro. If you were a pro player, what would you do? You’re not the last one in the building. You’re the first one in, the last one to leave. And he’s accepted it, and you’ve seen some of the results of that in practice.”
